Where to drink in York – Brew York Beer Hall:
Brew York is a microbrewery and taproom located just a short walk from York station. With an extensive range of beers on tap, from classic IPAs to experimental sours, there’s something for everyone. The taproom has a welcoming and laid-back atmosphere, and staff are happy to offer recommendations if you’re unsure what to go for, and happy to let you sample before buying. If you’re feeling peckish, there’s also a Korean BBQ street food kitchen on site, YUZU, serving up some amazingly good fried chicken that washes down very nicely with a pint.
York’s best wine and charcuterie – Pairings Wine Bar:
For a more refined dining experience, head to Pairings Wine Bar in the heart of York. This intimate bar offers an impressive selection of wines from around the world, along with a small but perfectly formed menu of seasonal dishes. The friendly and knowledgeable staff are always happy to offer recommendations for wine pairings, making it a great spot for a date night or a special occasion.
I can thoroughly recommend the sharing boards to go alongside your wine of choice – the cheese board in particular has a spectacular mix of cheeses, crackers, chutneys and crudités that is as good as it looks (and it’s presented beautifully!)
Refectory Kitchen and Terrace:
Located inside the Principal York hotel, the Refectory Kitchen and Terrace is a hidden gem that’s worth seeking out. The restaurant has a contemporary and stylish interior, and the menu focuses on modern British cuisine made with locally sourced ingredients. Whether you’re stopping by for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, you’ll find plenty of delicious options to choose from. And in the summer months, the terrace is a lovely spot to dine al fresco.

One popular vendor is Thai Season, where you can try dishes like pad Thai and green curry. Another must-visit spot is Los Moros, which serves up delicious Moroccan-inspired wraps and bowls. Spark York:
Spark York is a unique creative hub located in the heart of York. It is made up of several recycled shipping containers that have been repurposed to create a vibrant community space. The place is home to several independent businesses, including food and drink vendors, artisanal shops, and even a hair salon.
Clucking Oinks is a must-visit for meat lovers. They make the most incredible buttermilk fried chicken and specialise in serving up succulent, slow-cooked pork belly and ribs, which are cooked over an open flame to give them an incredible smoky flavour. Their portions are generous, and their homemade barbecue sauce is the perfect accompaniment to their tender meat dishes.
Betty’s Tea Rooms:
Still got room for dessert? No visit to York is complete without a trip to Betty’s Tea Rooms. This iconic institution has been serving up traditional afternoon tea since 1919, and it’s a must-visit for anyone with a sweet tooth. The menu includes classics like scones with clotted cream and jam, as well as a range of dainty sandwiches and cakes. And with its charming Art Deco décor and attentive service, Betty’s is a truly special place to indulge!
